On Wednesday 22nd January, COSLA’s Health and Social Care Spokesperson, Councillor Paul Kelly, gave the opening address at the second “Gathering Hope” event in Clydebank.

Gathering Hope is organised by Suicide Prevention Scotland and this most recent event brought together representatives from over 60 different third sector and charity organisations working to prevent suicide.

The day focused on learning about the role of stigma and discrimination as a common experience across different groups and communities, how this increases suicide risk, and what approaches help to address this challenge.

COSLA recognises the key role that third sector organisations play in ensuring access for those affected by suicide to high-quality, compassionate, appropriate and timely support, and remains committed to working with these organisations in a cross-society approach to preventing suicide in Scotland.

In his opening speech, Councillor Kelly said:

“I welcome the focus of today's event on the role of stigma and discrimination across different groups and communities and how this can increase suicide. Third sector organisations provide leadership and vision to support some of the most vulnerable people in our communities. They have an instrumental role, not just in suicide prevention, but across health and social care delivery. These organisations form a crucial part of the whole of government and society approach to preventing suicide, both working to reduce underlying inequalities and providing compassionate support to those who need it. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your tireless efforts each and every day.”
