The President of COSLA, Councillor Alison Evison has this week written to The Rt Honourable John Bercow, Speaker of the House of Commons condemning the use of inflammatory language by Members of Parliament over the last few weeks

The decision to write to the Speaker came following the most recent meeting of Council Leaders in Edinburgh.

Council Leaders felt that the language used in the Palace of Westminster over the last while encouraged hate speech, verbal abuse and the threat of physical violence.

In her letter to the Speaker, the COSLA President said on behalf of Leaders: “COSLA condemns the use of pejorative and inflammatory language in relation to Brexit and in any other context within and out with the UK Parliament over the last week and at any other time believing, that this widens the divisions in our society and encourages hate speech, verbal abuse and the threat of physical violence.”
