COSLA Community Wellbeing Spokesperson, Councillor Elena Whitham said:

"Gypsy/Travellers have a right to a nomadic lifestyle and today’s report shows that many families are spending time living roadside in Scotland as part of their cultural way of life.

"That is why COSLA is currently working with councils in Scotland to test out positive approaches to managing roadside encampments.

"This will help to ensure that Gypsy/Travellers have the services and support they need and that places are safe and suitable for short stays.

"COSLA Leaders are also working closely with Scottish Government on a national action plan that can help to deliver more and better permanent site provision where it is needed and to strengthen the way that the planning system supports Gypsy/Traveller communities.

"Tomorrow, along with the Minster for Older People and Equalities, I will be meeting with Gypsy/Travellers from across Scotland to hear more about their experiences of accommodation and their aspirations for the future."
