COSLA has set out why it is essential that the Scottish Government invests in local services in the upcoming Scottish budget in order to meet the housing needs of our communities.
As well as detailing key issues councils are facing in providing sufficient affordable homes, the Invest Locally In Scotland's Housing document asks the Scottish Government to:
- Reverse cuts made to the Affordable Housing Supply Programme since 2023/24 in full.
- Bring the Local Government benchmark for the construction of new affordable housing in line with that provided to Registered Social Landlords.
- Provide Local Government with sustainable funding required to provide good quality affordable housing, reduce numbers on social housing waiting lists, and meet our statutory homeless duties.
COSLA's Community Wellbeing Spokesperson, Councillor Maureen Chalmers, said:
"Housing is crucial for the well-being of our communities. This Housing Budget document highlights the urgent need for increased resources dedicated to affordable housing. With record levels of homelessness and a housing emergency in Scotland, it’s essential that we create more homes for everyone.
Investing in housing goes beyond just providing roofs over our heads. It plays a vital role in improving lives by helping to reduce child poverty and supporting our most vulnerable community members. Everyone deserves a safe and decent place to call home, and together, we can make this a reality”
